Kindergarten

Kindergarten at Candil Hall Academy is all about setting the stage for a love of learning. We blend hands-on activities with structured lessons, providing a nurturing environment where young minds can grow. Our approach helps each child feel confident, curious, and ready for the journey ahead.

Reading & Phonics

Using Saxon Phonics, students are introduced to letter sounds, blending, and word formation. This program goes beyond simple reading—it strengthens the foundational skills that support early literacy. By engaging with daily story time and age-appropriate books, children develop comprehension skills and a love for storytelling. These activities build their focus and understanding, preparing them for more advanced reading as they grow.

Math

Saxon Math K makes learning math concepts feel like a natural part of play. Concepts such as counting, addition, and subtraction are introduced through interactive activities using counting blocks, number lines, and other tactile tools. This hands-on approach helps children grasp abstract ideas more easily, making math feel accessible and intuitive. As they begin to see how numbers connect to everyday life, their confidence in solving problems grows, laying a strong foundation for future math skills.

Language Arts

Kindergarteners begin learning the D’Nealian method of writing, which focuses on smooth strokes that make transitioning to cursive in later years easier. This approach not only helps with letter formation but also supports the development of fine motor skills. Coupled with lessons from “Shurley English” on sentence structure and punctuation, students gain early writing skills that enable them to express their ideas with clarity. These combined activities encourage a natural progression from drawing and scribbling to writing words and sentences.

Science & Social Studies

Science in Kindergarten is about exploring the world through hands-on experiences. Using Mystery Science, students engage in activities like planting seeds, observing weather patterns, and discovering the characteristics of different animals. These activities foster a sense of curiosity and encourage children to ask questions about the world around them. This early engagement with scientific concepts helps develop observational skills and critical thinking. In social studies, children learn about their community, roles within society, and the importance of cooperation. This helps them understand their place in a broader context and builds a sense of community.

Social Skills & Classroom Routines

Kindergarten provides a supportive environment where children learn to navigate a classroom community. They practice skills like following instructions, working independently on tasks, and sharing with peers. These experiences are essential for developing the social skills needed to form friendships and communicate effectively. Establishing daily routines and participating in group activities also helps children feel more secure and confident, making the transition into more structured learning environments smoother.
