Preschool
At Candil Hall Academy, our Preschool program is designed for children ages 3-5, blending structured learning with play to create a dynamic environment where young minds can flourish. This program focuses on building a strong academic foundation, social skills, and a love for learning, ensuring that students are well-prepared for the transition to kindergarten.

Phonics and Early Literacy
Our use of the Abeka and Saxon Phonics K programs helps students connect letters with sounds, laying the groundwork for early reading skills. Through engaging activities like songs, games, and letter recognition exercises, children develop phonemic awareness, which is critical for their progression into reading. By the time they transition to kindergarten, children have a strong understanding of letter recognition, sound blending, and basic word formation, making early reading a natural next step.

Mathematical Foundations with
Saxon Math K
Starting in January, students are introduced to Saxon Math K, where they explore basic math concepts such as counting, sorting, and simple addition through hands-on activities. Using manipulatives like counting blocks and number cards, students begin to grasp abstract concepts like patterns, shapes, and early problem-solving skills. This solid foundation in number sense and spatial awareness ensures that children are ready for more advanced math when they move on to kindergarten.
Social-Emotional
Development:
Building social skills is a key part of our Preschool program. Children participate in daily circle time, group storytelling, and collaborative play, where they learn to share, listen, and communicate with their peers. Role-playing activities and guided interactions help students navigate emotions and build empathy, preparing them to form healthy relationships as they grow. These skills are essential for adjusting to the more structured environment of kindergarten, giving students the confidence to interact positively with their teachers and classmates.
Introduction to
D’Nealian Print:
As part of our writing curriculum, students begin learning the basics of writing through the D’Nealian method, which emphasizes smooth, flowing strokes. This method not only helps young learners develop fine motor skills but also sets them up for an easier transition to cursive writing in later grades. Children practice forming letters through engaging activities, making the process of learning to write fun and rewarding.
Science &
Exploration:
Our science curriculum is hands-on, encouraging children to explore their natural curiosity. Whether observing plant growth, learning about weather patterns, or experimenting with water and sand, students engage in activities that introduce them to basic scientific concepts. These playful explorations help children develop a sense of wonder and a desire to learn more about the world around them.

A Typical Day in Preschool
Our daily schedule is thoughtfully balanced with academic instruction, creative arts, outdoor play, and rest time, ensuring that children have the opportunity to learn, socialize, and recharge. This structure provides consistency, which is comforting for young children, while also allowing for flexibility to meet each child’s unique needs.
